10 07 2007 - 23:57Mobile Hablablow

I have started a Flickr account I will fill with my camera phone.
It’s mainly an image, graphic-depot from stuff I like, I can grab in here and there, all around Paris. Details I want to remember from existing stuff down the streets or all around my real life.

5 03 2007 - 10:10Electronica gems

Systrum Sistum, Radio Electronica, is an italian ( Bologna ) german ( Karlsruhe ) project streaming electronica tracks, just as you would listen to an endless album… Electronica was a very vague concept for me, not my cup of tea actualy, being more a Techno raised audiophile, until I got there.
People behind Systrum seem to have a very high idea, exigency, on what Electronica, or music, should deliver and certainly a rare knowledge, competence, that throws away bad stuff to only make you enjoy the best.

23 05 2006 - 13:36REPOST: Weather plugin for Textpattern

Simon Lindley has built a plugin snt_weather_0.2 for Textpattern wich allows you to retrieve the xoap data from weather.com, a Xml weather feed for any location. Fully customizable if you are not afraid of editing it… Numerous variables can be added to retrieve more information, not just the temperature… Just look above…

23 05 2006 - 13:34REPOST: Weather Icon pack

I did not like the default weather icons pack from Weather Channel, so I decided to replace each icon ( manually ) with the ones already used for the same purpose on Wordpress… And to create a zip file so everyone can enjoy it…
You can grab it here in a zipped file…
1/ Extract the images first.
2/ Then create a directory on your webserver, inside files, name it: weather.
3/ Place all the content of the zipped file inside this directory.
4/ Then edit Simon’s plugin within Textpattern and change his url to yours…
Thanks a lot Simon for this neat plugin I was expecting for a long time on Txp.

10 05 2006 - 18:17YUI... For Yahoo User Interface Library

The Yahoo dev team has released a package containing the result of their work in Css and JavaScript ( DOM scripting, Ajax and DHTML ). It has been released under the BSD license wich means free to use.
The team is also detailing their approach of webdesign with some great Css articles about fonts and Css resets
Learn also how they classify browsers into categories: C, A and X graded browsers
An interesting approach and an alternative to the traditional quartet schema: Ie, Opera, Firefox and Safari.

3 05 2006 - 13:06Want to see some rich media ?... Well, clic "yes" first

It’s been reported that to come version of Ie7 will block all content that is embeded in a page and replace it with a grey box with a message asking the user to clic first to see it’s content.
This will largely affect the web since all traditionaly included medias such as Flash or Quicktime will remain invisible until the user has allowed first the embeded media to run…
The public release of Ie7 is always pushed forward as it matches the release of the next Os for Windows called Vista wich has been delayed a couple of times, for security reasons… To 2007 early, middle or end…
There comes the worst part: This is also applying to Ie6 in a new security patch already released for Windows XP…
This will apply to all traditionally included media types using the embed tag… That is to say 99.9% of flash on the web…
The unique, fast, serious and lightweight workaround available today is to fire your flash movies with JavaScript. This way you don’t use the embed tag anymore… You can find this awesome script maintained by deconcept here
And of course if you switch to this option don’t forget that if a user does not have JavaScript turned on ( yes this can happen at large scale, just imagine a whole thousand computers in a university with Js disabled by the system admin ) your movie will not start…
If you go for a ride on Deconcept why don’t you take a glance to the article describing the new Adobe policy concerning the use of the word “Flash” in open-source projects…

1 05 2006 - 21:57Never get lost in Paris anymore...

The best geolocalisation tool has landed in France… The complete Google maps tools are finally available for France, Spain, Germany and Italy…
This is throwing a severe kick in other similar poor tools available until now like the one from the Ratp ( parisian subway company ) or Mappy… Our Yellow Pages should also be very worried about this one…
You should play with it on Paris: try this one for example and switch to full satellite image…

4 04 2006 - 15:22Bottom margin bug in Ie on a:hover

I experienced a heavy and long headache into solving a bug you’ll only experience in Internet Explorer ( 5.5 and 6 ): content jumping down in a list because of the use of a simple background-color on a:hover.
Just remove all floats from where the problem occurs up to the last parent node / div, that’ll solve the problem. Few…

22 03 2006 - 14:50Firefox 2 alpha 1 - Bon Echo

The future version of the Firefox browser, code name “Bon Echo” ( Good echo ), is available for download as alpha 1.
Among the nicest new feature, a new way of managing bookmarks in conjunction with the history records of your browser, called “places”.
Tristant Nitot is explaining ( watch the video in french ) that bookmarks are a clumsy way to find your way back to a previous browsed site and are completely outdated, first bookmarks have appeared 10 years ago, a century on the web.
“Places” will allow you then to better organise your browsing experience ( using SQLlite ).

16 03 2006 - 19:09Ajax: the success of semantics...

There was Flash… Flash here and there… Everywhere… Now Ajax…
One should writte an essay on the importance of names behind concepts and products that become famous on the web…
For sure Ajax sounds more attractive than JavaScript, Dom, Xhtml and Css.
So to have a technical explanation of what is really Ajax have a look at this Adaptivepath’s essay.
Everything else is just JavaScript, or clever Dom manipulation… Remember that the A stands for “asynchronous”, meaning from time to time, the opposite of “synchronous” wich means always: Gmail, Google News, Google Earth are using this technique to refresh your browser page only when needed.
Moving a block of text on your page is not Ajax.

14 03 2006 - 11:44Vengo, the movie

Antonio Canales as Caco
I had finally the chance to meet Vengo, a movie directed by the French Gypsy Tony Gatlif having for long months listen to the soundtrack only.
You’ll experiment, as usually in Gatlif’s movies, rare filmed pieces of gipsy music from Tomatito to Gritos de Guerra among many others.
Though the music represents half of the movie, the other half is pure wonder of contained intensity, treated in a very soft and bright fashion, supported by an engaging gallery of characters and a captivating black-brown-beige color palette.
